The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending October 1 was 3,670,000, a decrease of 55,000 from the preceding week’s revised level of 3,725,000. The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 398,836 in the week ending October 8, an increase of 66,442 from the previous week. There were 462,667 initial claims in the comparable week in 2010.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during the week ending October 1, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,093,486, a decrease of 72,423 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was 3,705,947.

The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending September 24 was 6,821,585, a decrease of 39,203 from the previous week.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,424 in the week ending October 1, an increase of 213 from the prior week. There were 2,748 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 18 from the preceding week.

There were 24,928 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending September 24, an increase of 1,060 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 39,134, an increase of 515 from the prior week.

States reported 3,016,035 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending September 24, a decrease of 11,412 from the prior week. There were 3,888,001 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending September 24 were in Puerto Rico (4.6), Alaska (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.6), California (3.4), New Jersey (3.4), Oregon (3.3), Nevada (3.2), Connecticut (3.1), Arkansas (3.0), Illinois (2.9), and South Carolina (2.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending October 1 were in North Carolina (+3,354), California (+2,527), Indiana (+866), Washington (+758), and Illinois (+754) while the largest decreases were in Alabama (-1,883), Michigan (-1,469), Florida (-1,175), Pennsylvania (-966), and Georgia

The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending August 20 was 7,169,176, a decrease of 167,009 from the previous week.

States reported 3,060,622 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending August 20, a decrease of 57,420 from the prior week. There were 4,507,669 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending August 20 were in Puerto Rico (5.1), New Jersey (4.1),Pennsylvania (4.1), Alaska (3.8) , Connecticut (3.8), California (3.7), Rhode Island (3.7), Oregon (3.6), Nevada (3.4), Massachusetts (3.2), and New York (3.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending August 27 were in California (+3,337), South Carolina (+3,108), Florida (+914), Kansas (+437), and Arkansas (+232) while the largest decreases were in New Jersey(-2,415), Pennsylvania (-2,371), Oregon (-1,680), North Carolina (-1,591), and Massachusetts (-1,438).

There were 26,012 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending August 13, a decrease of 766 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 38,032, a decrease of 99 from the prior week.

States reported 3,118,042 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending August 13, an increase of 31,261 from the prior week. There were 4,556,751 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending August 13 were in Puerto Rico (5.2), Pennsylvania (4.2), New Jersey (3.9), Alaska (3.8) , California (3.8), Connecticut (3.8), Oregon (3.7), Rhode Island (3.7), Nevada (3.6) and Wisconsin (3.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending August 20 were in Pennsylvania (+1,904), Puerto Rico (+1,453), Oregon (+698), Rhode Island (+634), and California (+615) while the largest decreases were in Massachusetts (-1,627), South Carolina (-1,058), Georgia (-978), Nevada (-695), and Florida (-670 ).

There were 26,769 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending August 6, an increase of 635 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 38,135, an increase of 508 from the prior week.

States reported 3,086,781 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending August 6, a decrease of 43,827 from the prior week. The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending August 13 were in New York (+5,047), Massachusetts (+2,499), New Jersey (+2,223), Puerto Rico (+1,236), and Connecticut (+532) while the largest decreases were in California (-10,912), Texas (-1,690), Minnesota (-1,061), Florida (-987), and Missouri (-836 ).

There were 24,220 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 2, an increase of 712 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 36,263, a decrease of 916 from the prior week.

States reported 3,153,982 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending July 2, a decrease of 80,133 from the prior week. There were 3,509,073 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
